Info:

Hamburg is the biggest port in Germany and best known for it's large container and petroleum facilities. Container ships are handled at one of the 3 major container terminals Burchardkai, Tollerort (TCT) or Altenwerder (CTA). Large oil and chamical storage facilities like the Deutsche Shell AG and Esso dominate the southern part of the harbour, while the eastern part houses the car carrier terminals and facilities for cool cargo.

Comment:

Hamburg is one of my favorite ports because it combines some great container terminals with a beautiful city. Blankenese, Finkenwerder and Altenwerder offer a great scenery for taking pictures and (almost) all the major shipping lines (except Maersk) have routes that include this great harbour!

Upgrades:

The Hamburg port authority has released information regarding the plans for an expansion of the port's container facilities to keep up with global increases in container shipment figures. There are several projects being handled side by side including modernization and dredging work in the Waltershofer Hafen (Eurogate and HHLA) as well as a completely new terminal in the central harbour areas a.k.a. Container Terminal Steinwerder (CTS). Experts say Hamburg is expected to handle close to 18 Mio TEU by the year 2017 so obviously a lot of work will be put into upgrading all terminals and waterways to meet the demands of the future.
